Welcome to Wimbledon!!

We were so excited to get tennis as one of our Olympic events as we could walk there!  Who walks to the Olympics?  Tennis was held at the world famous AELTA - aka Wimbledon.  The Wimbledon tournament is steeped in tradition!  The founding fathers must have been turning in their graves - players wearing color and not the required Wimbledon White.  And all that Olympink!!!
Wimbledon Village was just hopping - just like it was a few weeks ago for the tennis classic.  The same players who rented out houses in our tiny development were back - this time playing for a chance to win an Olympic medal!

First up - Andy Roddick.  Although probably at the twilight of his career as a player, he still proved he had what it took to move on in the tournament.  Even his shoes had spirit!!

And then there is Roger...  Possibly my most favorite player.  Love watching him play.  He rarely shows any emotion and is just a steady, steady player.

And then there are the breaks, a chance to get a drink and ponder how the game is going.  Fortunately here the umbrella is for shade and not for rain protection!!!

Roger had all kinds of fans!

Roger was once again victorious and a lucky few got his autograph.  I opted to get his picture!!

Next up - women's doubles.  Woe to the Romania team who played those sisters!

These sisters command the game.  They take the lead and don't look back.  Their presence on the court is palatable and as a spectator I felt I was watching something very special.  They are truly champions!  I think it will be years before we witness another team like these two.

Yup, they won! (Was there ever any doubt?!)

This is Phillipe Petzschner of Germany.  He rents one of the cottages across from ours.  We watched him lose his match after breaking his tennis racquet in half in frustration.

Our last match of the day was watching Caroline Wozniacki advance to the next round.  She rents another cottage across from us.  It was nice to see her win as she went out in the first round of Wimbledon and was not a happy camper!!

These games would be nothing without the volunteers who keep things running smoothly.  From the ball girl, to the umpire to the guy who holds the umbrella - all play an important role in the success of these games.

Such a fun, fun day!!  Different than Wimbledon but special all the same!

  2. Lucky you--living so close to Wimbledon! Isn't it amazing that Murray finally won a big one for GB? Sure has been amazing--every bit of it!
