Day Tripping to Burghley House

A group of us gathered at Kings Cross station to make our way by train to Burghley House.

We looked for the platform for our train.  This would be the correct platform if we were going to Hogwarts but not for our train to Peterborough!

We arrived at Burghley House! Grand doesn't even begin to describe this house!  This Elizabethan House was opened in 1587 and built for William Cecil, the 1st Lord Burghley.  He was the Lord High Treasurer and Chief Minister to Queen Elizabeth I.  No wonder he had such nice digs!

We made our way inside and started our tour in the kitchen.  I am quite sure this kitchen is about 3 times bigger than my current flat!  The stove (hob) was enormous!

As were the work tables. The deer head is a nice touch!

We saw the bells used to summon the downstairs staff.  There were probably about 60 of these bells.

As well as the buckets used to clean out the numerous fireplaces

We saw beautiful rooms

And beautiful outdoor gardens

We opted to dine inside the orangery

All too soon it was time to leave

And head back to the station

To wait for our train.

And less than 2 hours later we were back in London.  Great day out with dear friends!

  1. That was a wonderful tour Nancy. I almost feel like I was there. We have just started watching Downton Abbey and cannot even comprehend that lifestyle.
