Vikingeskibsmuseet - Let's Just Call It The Viking Museum!

On a recent trip to Copenhagen, we took a day trip to Rothkilde to explore the Viking Museum.

The collection consists of 5 different Viking ships.  These ships were deliberately sunk over a 1000 years ago to block entrance to a nearby harbor.

They were only recently excavated and pieced together.  Some were more complete than others.

This collection of ancient Viking ships is only a small part of the story here.

This is a museum, an active boatyard, and a research institution.
They employ the methods and tools and technology used to create these ships so many years ago.
Ropemaking!

Cutting planks used for the ships.

The boat they are currently building.

This is a reproduction of one of the original ships.  This reconstructed longship completed a voyage from Rothkilde, along the north coast of Scotland and onto Dublin.  It spent a year in a museum in Dublin.  It sailed back the following year.  This was not a trip for the for fainthearted!

What a thrill for us to get a chance to enjoy these old historical boats.

And always fun for us to walk around the docks

And see some modern vessels.  It makes me wonder what these boats will tell future generations about us.

Soon we were back at the train station and boarded a train.

And found ourselves back here and on to our next adventure.

But we carry with us fond memories of a great day spent among the ghosts of the Vikings.

  1. Fascinating! I visited a Viking museum in Oslo one time that was so interesting. Who would have thought?
