If it's March it must be Barcelona!

It has been a cold winter here in London.  So in early March we thought we would take an extended weekend and look for some sun and warmth,  Our choice - Barcelona!

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona thrived as a major trading route to all points east. Goods coming from the east would come into Barcelona and head to points north and south.  It is ironic that Columbus' discovery of the New World to the west marked the start of Barcelona's decline as a major seaport.

Today's Barcelona oozes with charm!  La Ramblas is Barcelona's most famous boulevard that meanders through the heart of the Old City.   It is named for the stream that once flowed here.

It has a great pedestrian strip in the middle filled with vendors. We saw lots of soccer scarves...

As well as many talented (and some not so talented) artists...

And this beautiful building that used to be an umbrella factory.

Just off Las Ramblas is the colorful La Boqueria Market.

We toured the Palace of Catalan Music - an amazing concert hall with a beautiful stained glass skylight.

We feasted at charming outdoor restaurants.

We saw reminders that this was once a Roman city.  In Roman cities, tombs (outside the city wall) typically lined the road leading to the city.

Beautiful squares...

A vibrant waterfront...

And a trip to Barcelona wouldn't be complete without some Gaudi thrown in...

Along the Block of Discord...

At Parc Guell...

Not to mention the Sagrada Familia.  I loved the circular stairs looking down..

And looking up (while holding on tight).

Circular stairs were everywhere.

Barcelona's version of London's Boris Bikes

Flamenco shoes and fans - really serious business here!

Interesting street signs...

Night time at the Cathedral.

And all too soon it was time to leave.  When we left Barcelona it was about 75 degrees.  When we arrived back in London it was 30 degrees and snowing.  But it was nice to have a respite from scarves and gloves.

  1. Glad you found some warm weather! I've yet to make it to Barcelona, but hope to someday--so many beautiful colors!
